What are digital products?

Digital products are items that are delivered and accessed electronically, such as software, ebooks, online courses, digital art, music, video, and audio etc.

One of the main benefits of digital products is that they can be reproduced and distributed easily and quickly, making them a popular choice for both businesses and consumers. For example, they don’t require storage or shipping, and they can be accessed instantly on a wide range of devices like tablets.

Why sell digital products?

There are several reasons why you may want to sell digital products:

  1. Low production and distribution costs – Digital products can be created and distributed cheaply as they don’t require physical production and transportation. This makes it more profitable in comparison to selling physical products.
  2. Instant delivery – Digital products are normally delivered instantly, allowing customers to access them as soon as they make a purchase. This is useful for products that are needed quickly, such as software or online courses.
  3. Wide reach – Digital products can be sold and delivered to customers all over the world, making it possible to reach a wide audience.
  4. Multiple sales channels – You can sell digital products through a variety of online platforms, such as online marketplaces, social media, and eCommerce websites.
  5. Passive income potential – You can continue to generate revenue even after your digital products have been created, enabling the potential for passive income.

What is Etsy?

Etsy is an online marketplace, founded in 2005. The platform enables people to buy or sell handmade items, including digital products, physical items, vintage items, and more. It’s become a popular destination for people searching for unique, one-of-a-kind gifts and items.

On Etsy, sellers can create their own online stores to showcase and sell their products, while customers can purchase via the website or mobile app.

The Pros and Cons of using Etsy

Here are some pros and cons of selling on Etsy:

Pros:

  1. Large audience – Etsy has a large, active user base, which can make it easier for sellers to reach potential customers.
  2. Easy to get started – Setting up a shop on Etsy is relatively straightforward, and the platform provides tools and resources to help sellers get started.
  3. Focused on handmade and unique items –  Etsy’s focus on handmade and unique items can be attractive to buyers looking for these types of products.
  4. Support for sellers – Etsy provides support for sellers through its seller handbook, forums, and customer service team.

Cons:

  1. Fees – Etsy charges fees for listings and sales which cuts into a seller’s profits.
  2. Competition – There is a lot of competition on Etsy, and it can be challenging for sellers to stand out among the many other sellers on the platform. Digital products, in particular, are a saturated category.
  3. Limited product categories – Etsy has strict guidelines on what types of products can be sold on the platform, which may limit the types of items that sellers can offer.
  4. Limited control – Sellers on Etsy do not have as much control over the look and feel of their storefront as they would if they were selling on their own website.

Overall, selling on Etsy can be useful for reaching a large audience, but it’s important to consider the fees and competition.

I have a better method for selling digital products which you can find at the end of this post.

Is selling digital items on Etsy profitable?

It can be profitable depending on the overall digital products you’re selling, the price, and your reach.

It’s easy to make and sell digital items on Etsy since anyone can do it. However, many digital products are saturated so you’re competing with hundreds (sometimes thousands) of other sellers, meaning it can be difficult to make a sale.

Let’s look at an example. If you search for Instagram templates, there are over 117,000 results. That’s an incredibly high amount of competition if you were to sell this type of digital product:

To increase your success selling digital products on Etsy, you’ll need a strategic marketing strategy, such as using social media to build an audience. You’ll also need to choose the right type of product that’s in demand with not a lot of competition. Then, you’ll need to consider your pricing and ensure you’re offering value to customers.

Rather than using Etsy, I suggest setting up your own website and selling your digital products from there – this is covered in the next section. First, let’s look at the potential profit of some popular digital products.

Potential profit of popular digital products

Digital productSelling pricePotential profit
Ebook $9.99$6.99
Online course$197$147
Digital art print$25$20
Planner template$9.99$6.99
Wedding invitation$19.99$14.99
Embroidery pattern$7.99$5.99

Keep in mind that this is only a guideline, and you’ll need to consider factors like demand, marketing, online competitors, and the time and effort spent creating your products.

It’s also important to consider fees, especially if you’re thinking of selling on Etsy.

Etsy charges sellers a range of fees for selling products on their marketplace. These include:

  • Listing fees – Etsy charges a listing fee of 20 cents per item for every product that you list for sale on the platform.
  • Transaction fees – Etsy currently charges 6.5% of the price of your product plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping. This doesn’t include any additional sales tax you may be charged, depending on where you’re selling from.
  • Payment processing fees – As Etsy uses third-party payment processors, you’ll also be charged a fee for using their service. This fee depends on the payment method used and the location of the seller and buyer.
  • Optional services – Etsy also has extra charges if you use any of their optional services, such as promoted listings, offsite ads, and Etsy Plus subscription.

In other words, Etsy fees can mount up. Even if you sell a couple of products, you’re going to be paying out a chunk of your revenue in fees.

A Better Place to Sell Your Digital Products

An alternative to Etsy is to sell your digital products via your own website. Now, this method also requires you to build your own audience, but you have 100% control of your website.

Here are some of the advantages of selling on your own website rather than Etsy:

  • Control how it looks
  • Only pay monthly hosting fees
  • Can sell as many or as little digital products as you like
  • Your competitors won’t be shown on the same page as your products – this is something that Etsy does!
  • You can sell your website and business down the line – you can’t sell an Etsy store

Setting up your business and website is easier than it sounds. Here’s a process you can follow to set up your own digital product business.

  1. Find your niche. First, it’s important to identify a specific niche rather than simply trying to target everyone. This will help you attract customers who’re interested in the products and content you produce. For example, you could create digital downloads related to weddings.
  2. Build your website. Next, you need to purchase a domain name and set up your website. I have a tutorial on how to do this here – it’s exactly the same process as if you were starting a standalone blog.
  3. Consistency is key. To build an audience of customers, you need to provide regular, high-quality content. This will help to establish you as an authority in your niche and keep people coming back for more.
  4. Promote your business. Once you have your website up and running, you need to spread the word about it. Share your content on social media, participate in online communities related to your niche, and consider guest posting on other blogs to get more exposure.
  5. Engage with your audience. Establishing a relationship with your audience is crucial to building a successful business. Respond to comments, ask for feedback, and engage with people on social media and email to build a sense of community.
  6. Use search engine optimization (SEO). By optimizing your website for search engines, you increase the chance of your content being found by people searching for related topics. This drives traffic to your blog and expands your audience.

Overall, building your website and audience takes time and effort, but by following these tips, you can start to see results.

How To Create Digital Products

So, now you know the steps to getting started with a website, you’ll need to know how to create digital products.

Here is a guide to help you make the start:

Determine what your target audience needs

The first step in creating a digital product is to identify what your target audience is struggling with. This will help you to create a product that meets those needs. For example, if you’re targeting the wedding niche, your audience is probably looking for beautiful invitations they can send to friends and family.

Develop your product

Next, you can start developing your digital product. This involves creating the content or functionality of your product, as well as designing any necessary graphics or visuals. If you’re looking for an easy website to use, I suggest Canva. You can get started with the free version and explore the various digital elements to practice design.

Test and refine your product

Before launching your digital product, it’s a good idea to test it with a small group of people to get feedback and make any necessary adjustments. This helps to ensure that your product meets the needs of your target audience, meaning it’s more likely to be profitable.

Determine your pricing

Once you’ve created your digital product, you need to decide how much you will charge for it. One way to do this is to see what your competitors are charging. You could also offer a special pre-launch price to drive sales.

Launch and promote your product

After launch, start promoting your digital download to your target audience. This may involve creating marketing materials, such as landing pages or email campaigns, or using social media or paid advertising to reach potential customers.

Monitor and analyze your sales

As you start selling your digital product, it’s important to monitor and analyze your sales to understand what’s working and what could be improved. By continually optimizing your product and marketing efforts, you’ll give yourself the very best chance of success.

How to choose which digital product to sell

If you’re struggling to narrow down your choices, here are a few steps you can take to decide on which digital product to sell:

Research your market

Research your niche market to understand the demand for different types of digital products and the competition. By doing this, you can identify opportunities and gaps in the market, making it easier to choose a product that has the potential to be highly profitable.

Consider your skills and expertise

Consider your skills and expertise when choosing a digital product to sell. For instance, if you don’t know how to sew, then you’re probably going to find it difficult to produce a sewing template. Take advantage of your existing knowledge and skills, rather than trying to learn a new skill set from scratch.

Validate your product idea

Before committing to a specific digital product, do some market research and get feedback from potential customers. Ask your audience what they want to see, or ask people on forums within your niche for their ideas.

Choose a product you’re passionate about

Finally, choose a digital product that you’re passionate about creating and selling. It’ll make the whole process much more enjoyable if you’re working on a project you love.

Overall, choosing the right digital product to sell will depend on your specific goals, audience, and market.
